In the eyes of Chelsea supporters, Cech was, and always will be, a bonafide club legend; a status afforded to an elite bunch of players and something for Courtois to aspire to. The trouble with the young pretender is that the prodigious start to his career has brought with it an apparent air of aloofness that sits uneasily with fans.
Last season, as Chelsea coasted to the title, it was plain sailing for Courtois who had the luxury of a cohesive, well-organised defence in front of him. A feature of the Blues’ subsequent demise was the disintegration of the backline, and noticeable cracks in the keeper’s game.
