Olivier Giroud speaks out on his future as Chelsea striker faces increased competition for his place

Olivier Giroud has insisted he is willing to stay and fight for his place at Chelsea, but conceded his situation may be reassessed in the January transfer window. The 34-year-old has fallen down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge with the arrival of Timo Werner this summer and emergence of Tammy Abraham last season. When Abraham was injured last term, the France international stepped up to the plate and scored some vital goals for his side. However, Giroud has been limited to just two appearances in the League Cup this campaign. Although he suggested his future could be reassessed in January, he remained insistent that he is ready to push the likes of Werner and Abraham all the way. ‘I’ve written a book called ‘Always Believe It’ so I’m not going to go anywhere without a fight,’ Giroud said when quizzed on his future. ‘There is competition but I will fight and we saw the rewards of that at the end of last season. ‘I am convinced that I have a role to play at Chelsea. We will see in January.’ Speaking ahead of France’s clashes against Ukraine, Portugal and Croatia, Les Bleus boss Didier Deschamps praised the mental fortitude of Giroud. ‘He [Giroud] has an above-average strength of character and this is related to his background,’ Deschamps added.
